About this listen

A Song of Shadows sees Parker revisit the crimes of a WWII concentration camp while he struggles to regain his health after the near-fatal shooting in The Wolf in Winter.

Grievously wounded private detective Charlie Parker investigates a case that has its origins in a Nazi concentration camp during the Second World War.

Broken but undeterred, private detective Charlie Parker faces the darkest of dark forces in a case with its roots in the second world war and a concentration camp unlike any other....

Recovering from a near-fatal shooting and tormented by memories of a world beyond this one, Parker has retreated to the small Maine town of Boreas to recover. There he befriends a widow named Ruth Winter and her young daughter, Amanda. But Ruth has her secrets. She is hiding from the past, and the forces that threaten her have their origins in the Second World War, in a town called Lubko and a concentration camp unlike any other. Old atrocities are about to be unearthed, and old sinners will kill to hide their sins.

Now Parker is about to risk his life to defend a woman he barely knows, one who fears him almost as much as she fears those who are coming for her. His enemies believe him to be vulnerable. Fearful. Solitary.

But they are wrong. Parker is far from afraid and far from alone. For something is emerging from the shadows....

Just keeps building and building until...

Such a wonderful storyteller and such complex characters who almost seem like old friends now.

Excellent story with lots of developments. I actually enjoyed those more supernatural elements. Looking forward to the next.

Narration by Jeff Harding outstanding as always.

This books marks the beginning of the next phase of Charlie Parker's journey into the supernatural. I enjoyed it although the tone was more somber than usual. I think you would have had to have read the other books to follow what's going on.I like that both his daughters are playing an important role in this novel. I would recommend but only to fans of the earlier novels.

A some what different Parker novel

It started ok, but drifted off in the middle . Picked up again by the end

Overall good read

Excellent read, it's actually an eye opener as to how much you would become a slave to drugs. also amazing that no one ever served time for misleading the label on pain killers medicine boxes. Overall it made me think of what his parents and family must have gone through and how very it must have been to finally get free of the addiction.

Heart breaking

Whilst the story in isolation is a tad predictable and slews from the normal Charlie Parker plot it sets the scene for two parallel stories to unfold
Both the hunt for the names on the list and who or what is CP's daughter?

Opens up a whole new chapter of works

Fascinating book, Parker finds his true purpose in this story,Start's slowly but builds beautify to an apt ending, I found the story very emotional concerning the atrocities committed by the Nazis and upsetting in parts.
Looking forward to the next chapter in Parker's fight against evil

Another cracking book

If you could sum up A Song of Shadows in three words, what would they be?

Dazzling complexity woven seamlessly by a master story teller.

What did you like best about this story?

The portrayal of Connolly's usual well drawn characters.

Which character – as performed by Jeff Harding – was your favourite?

Jeff Harding has such a rich range of characters in his voice to focus on just one is impossible.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No though on all subsequent sittings I'll go back a chapter to re-embrace the story.

Any additional comments?

I think I've heard all the Connolly stories and every one is a special pearl.

A shot up Charlie but still with it big time
