About this listen

Killian Barclay is a grumpy Scottish billionaire who hates me…and now I'm his wife.

Their marriage of convenience is anything but…

All Killian Barclay wants is to be left the hell alone. He's had enough heartache to last a lifetime, and he has no more need for love—earning him the reputation of a broody Scot and eventually turning his famous ancestral home into a den of iniquity. It doesn't take long for tales of his raunchy house parties to reach the rest of his family, though, inspiring them to hatch a plan to shake Killian out of his routine.

New Yorker Sylvie Devereaux is tough as nails—as the daughter of famous yet neglectful parents, she's grown a hard shell and keeps everyone at arm's length. So when she sneaks into Barclay Manor during a trip to Scotland to get a glimpse of a famous heirloom, she doesn't anticipate facing off against the brutish, maddening highlander who lives there. And she certainly didn't expect to ever see the bastard again.

Yet just weeks later, she's approached by Killian's family with a proposal—move to Scotland and marry Killian to improve his playboy reputation, and after one year, she'll walk away with ten million dollars. Sylvie agrees, even knowing that their plan is more deceptive than he realizes. But as she grows closer to Killian and the end of their year together, she has to decide: Is the love of a good man with a dark soul worth keeping, or is she willing to break Killian's heart now that it's well and truly hers?

I don't often leave reviews. Especially negative ones, and yet...

First, I did enjoy the story. No masterpiece but good enough. But omg, the female narrator's version of a male Scottish accent was so horrific I could not listen to it without dying a little inside.

Such a shame because Will Watt narration his part beautifully, as he always does and his accent was impeccable (he even does a scouse accent marginally well and that's hard to do).

Bottom line, if this was narrated in duet style it would be a great audiobook. Unfortunately it wasn't and so it isn't. Don't waste your money or credits and eye read on KU instead.

Terrible Scottish accent from female narrator

3.5 but rounded up.
I’m unsure how I feel about this book, and I don’t like feeling that way.

The plot was decent and a fresher take on arranged marriage/hate to lovers. But I felt it lacked any kind of emotional connection.
The scenes with Claire were swept over, and we never got closure.
There were quite a few continuity errors, which broke reading engagement. That was a shame as if I had been kept in the story, I felt I would have enjoyed it more.

What to say about the characters. Killian was a grumpy Scot who harbored intense scars. However, we never really got to know him. It was all surface level until the reveal.
Sylvie. Now, this is going to sound harsh, but I really disliked this character. She was entitled, selfish, narcissistic, manipulative, and thought the world owed her even though she never did a thing to earn her way.

I fought to read this book and decided to listen to the audiobook instead, which I think helped me get through it. I did almost DNF at 40%

I did finish, and I’m glad I did, as I liked the ending and how grounded they both became.
