Summary

Beyond the basics of polyamory lies a complex web of negotiations, agreements, pitfalls and rewards. Kathy Labriola, a relationships counselor who has worked for many years with singles, couples and groups in polyamorous and open relationships, sets forth some of the realities of alternative lifestyles: dealing with some of the common relationship-disrupters, managing jealousy, choosing compatible partners, combining BDSM with polyamory, distinguishing between sex addiction and polyamory, and much more.

A great book if it fits your kind of Poly

There were times that I almost stopped listening to this one, that doesn't mean however that it was a bad book. I am a counsellor myself doing focused study on CNM (consensual non monogamy) and have read, and listened to, a lot at this point so I am developing my own biases for what I like and feel fits.

If you are a couple looking at opening up but want to keep your relationship primary there is no doubt in my mind that this is a very interesting and helpful book. The perspective it comes at secondary relationships from for the majority of the book feels to me like this is the primary audience. There is a chapter a late in the book that focusses on the secondary experience, however it feels decidedly secondary to me compared to the bulk of the book.

There are however a few sections that this book does far better than any other volume I have yet read. The section touching on legal considerations is very well constructed and raises some great points that are often missing from books on polyamory. The chapter on feminism is also very well put together and offers some great perspectives.

I feel this is a book of it's time and great for it, the landscape of poly seems to have shifted in that time.
As part of seeking a wider view of poly or a start point for couples opening I wouldn't hesitate to recommend, but I would also recommend wider more recent reading as well.
