About this listen

Tarl Cabot has always believed himself to be a citizen of Earth. He has no inkling that his destiny is far greater than the small planet he has inhabited for the first 20-odd years of his life. One frosty winter night in the New England woods, he finds himself transported to the planet of Gor, also known as Counter-Earth, where everything is dramatically different from anything he has ever experienced. It emerges that Tarl is to be trained as a Tarnsman, one of the most honored positions in the rigid, caste-bound Gorean society. He is disciplined by the best teachers and warriors that Gor has to offer...but to what end?

This is the first book of John Norman's popular and controversial Gorean Saga, a series of novels the author began in 1967 with Tarnsman of Gor and are now considered cult classics. This audiobook is based on the definitive edition recently published by E-Books.

I read this book 20 years ago, and it sets up the series beautifully. Yes, some rampant sexism but all good fun. Certainly better than 50 shades of crap. The world of Gor is well realised and feasible, and the pacing and story kept me interested again. Well worth a listen.

60s fantasy still fresh

Couldn't get through the story for the screeching and shouting of the bizarre narrator! Quite how or why he chose some of the character voices is beyond me but it's borderline unlistenable

Horrible narration

I hadn't read the Tarnsman of Gor for about 40 years, so I was delighted to see it is now available for download. And I wasn't disappointed - the narration is excellent, and the story itself was as good as I remembered it. The book has a strong plot, lots of humour and is a fun listen! I'm off to download the next in the series.

Enjoyable read

Honestly, listened to this three times now and still love it. Got to book 23 where it does begin to waffle, however this one is marvelous!!.Feminists may despise this book, and some men may, although I really do enjoy it and WILL listen again .

Love

I love this book. I’ve had this for around 7 months now and I have must have listened to it around 40-50 times, Ralph really sets the characters in the book. I can picture each scene perfectly and I can’t put it down haha. I finally have books 2-7 after wanting them for a long time. I really recommend this book and the entire saga to anyone who wants to explore the Gorean Lifestyle.

Can’t get enough of this book

I am a big fan of the Gor series of books and was absolutely delighted when I found that Audible had released the first of the series. The narrator reads the book very well and clearly. I would recommend it to any fan of the Gor series. I have also noticed that vol. 2 (Outlaw of Gor) has also been released on here.
