Summary

Mercy Dove is a woman haunted by her past and plagued by scandal. The affairs of Evesham Hall, Mercy's infamous ancestral home, fill the broadsheets. But only society's elite, the select few invited by her stepfather, truly know the depravity of the decaying manor.

Tired and eager for change, Mercy invites a new acquaintance to Evesham Hall, young Miss Violette. Her arrival provokes a shift within the walls, altering the status quo, and a much darker, more sinister shadow falls over the manor.

With childhood memories resurfacing and the ghosts of the past looming, Mercy must find the courage to confront her inner demons and conquer the darkness surrounding her. Can Mercy Dove emerge unscathed in her final act?

The scene is set, ready for a spine-tingling story to unfold, a Victorian gothic horror.

Take a seat; the curtain is about to rise. Let us begin at the end.

Really Delivers

Without wanting to give too much away, this follows in the tradition of such works as The Turn of The Screw in really building the reader's empathy for a character who is less than entirely wholesome! Delivers the spooky thrill it sets out to do, and keeps you guessing for long enough to satisfy. Great job!

Beautifully atmospheric!

I want to start by saying that Victorian Gothic Horror is not my usual genre, so the only other books I can really compare this to are Becky Wright's other stories.

This novella has everything Wright does well - that gothic feel, the dark atmosphere, the horror that's not too scary for a wimp like me... *ahem* She always strikes a great balance for me: her books are horror without being terrifying; there's murder, but I wouldn't call it gory. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator does a fabulous job of conveying that atmosphere Wright's books are known for.

I liked that it didn't quite end the way I thought it would - there were elements of what I thought would happen, but it also played out differently. It's not a story of possession - which I was sure it was in the beginning - but rather a story of a mental health struggle. This needs to be tackled carefully, and this is where I'm torn. I can't decide if this is the story of a girl who does something terrible and finds comfort in her fractured mental health (which I would love) or if this is the story of a girl who hears voices and sees things and is compelled to murder by her hallucinations (which I wouldn't love). I want to believe it's the former, but it wasn't clear from the story (unless I missed something, which is possible!), so I'm torn.

Being a short read, this would be perfect for a chilly autumn afternoon with a hot tea and a few candles flickering around you. I'm a slow reader but could have got through it in one sitting! It's an easy recommendation if you love gothic horror but, like me, are a coward and can't take much ;)

Atmospheric

I love books with an edge to the story. This didn't disappoint, scary in places and spine tingly. It had plenty of twists to keep me interested. Highly recommend this book.
