Рассказ повествует о корабле «Катти Сарк», самом известном и единственном сохранившимся до наших дней парусников, лучшем клипере девятнадцатого века, бороздившем Индийский океан.
Первый вариант этого рассказа был опубликован в 1944 году. После того, как его перевод был издан в Великобритании, английские читатели сообщили много новых фактов о судьбе парусника. В 1952 году в Англии было создано Общество сохранения «Катти Сарк», которое на собранные деньги отреставрировало корабль и поставило его на сухую стоянку.
В 1957 году, полностью переработанный Иваном Ефремовы вариант рассказа с попыткой изложения этапов подлинной истории «Катти Сарк», был опубликован в альманахе «Мир приключений».
