拙著『本多猪四郎（ほんだ いしろう）　無冠の巨匠』の中の怪獣映画論でも言及したが、巨大な白いマッコウクジラ「モビイ・ディック」と人間たちの戦いが描かれる、1851年に書かれたハーマン・メルヴィルの小説『白鯨』は、怪獣映画史的にも重要な作品である。 非常に長部（ちょうぶ）であり、鯨の生態学的な記述や捕鯨技術の詳細がえんえんと続き、メインの人物が登場するのは読み始めてかなり経ってから……というこの小説は、一般には読みにくいものとして多くの読者を持てなかったが、実は映画化され、巨大なクジラが観客にイメージ出来るようになったことで、広く知られるようになったのだ。 文明史家、作家の原田実は著書『怪獣のいる精神史』において、これを、巨大生物の描写に映画という「動く視覚表現」が追いついた記録だとしている。(本文より）切通理作の「映画の友よ」はこちらから→http://yakan-hiko.com/risaku.html
