＜内容紹介＞
格太郎が肺病に苦しんでいる一方で、妻のおせいは書生と不倫を続けていた。
最初は離縁も考えたが、先の短い自分のことや可愛い子供のことを考えるとどうしても踏み切れずにいた。
弟の格二郎は、「僕だったらとっくに離縁しているんだがな。あんな人に憐れみを掛ける所があるんだろうか」と意見めいた口を利くことがあったが、単に憐れみだけの感情でもない。
おせいは不倫相手との遊戯の暇には、その余力で格太郎を愛していた。
格太郎としては、病で弱り切ったせいもあって、このお情けにすがらずにいられずにいたのである。
ある日のこと、いつものようにおせいが不倫相手の元へ出かけた後、格太郎は息子の正一とその友人達とかくれんぼをして遊んでやった。
格太郎は部屋の押し入れにあった長持の中へと隠れるが、偶然掛け金がかかってしまい、閉じ込められてしまう。
格太郎は声を張り上げて助けを呼ぶが一向に気付かれない。
格太郎が覚悟を決めた時、彼に気付いたのは不倫相手との逢瀬から帰って来たおせいだったのだが……
＜江戸川乱歩（えどがわ・らんぽ）＞
日本の推理小説家。1894年10月21日生まれ、三重県生まれ。筆名は、19世紀の米国の小説家エドガー・アラン・ポーに由来する。数々の職業遍歴を経て作家デビューを果たす。本格的な推理小説と並行して『怪人二十面相』、『少年探偵団』などの少年向けの推理小説なども多数手がける。代表作は『人間椅子』、『黒蜥蜴』、『陰獣』など。1954年には乱歩の寄付を基金として、後進の推理小説作家育成のための「江戸川乱歩賞」が創設された。
