 中島敦の短編小説。唐の時代に書かれた「人虎」として知られる中国の変身譚を元にしている。教材としても人気があり、高等学校の現代文の教科書に多く掲載されている。李徴は博学才穎で、若くして名を馳せ役人となったが、自尊心が強く官職に満足できなかった。官職を辞し詩作に耽るも、上手くいかずに挫折する。その後、生活のために地方官となるも、屈辱的な日々に自尊心はひどく傷つき、ついに発狂して姿を消してしまった。翌年、李徴の友人である袁参が、人喰虎が出るという道を危険を顧みずに進んでいると、一匹の猛虎が躍り出た。虎は、かつての友人李徴であった。李徴は袁参に語る。なぜ自分は虎になったのか。人との交わりを避け、詩家を目指すも切磋琢磨を怠った。それは臆病な自尊心と、尊大な羞恥心の所為であった。この羞恥心が心のうちに潜む虎であり、家族や友人を傷つけた。そうしてついに、本当の虎になってしまったのだ。誰しもが心中には猛獣を飼っている。それが自分や人を傷つける。李徴の場合はそれが虎であった。(C)Pan Rolling Asian Genre Fiction Literary Fiction World Literature
