宿となる城へ友人と向かった主人公。その城の主の娘は、友人の許嫁でした。その許嫁から、秘密で手紙を叔母へ届けてほしいと頼まれます。時間はかかるものの、手紙を届ける主人公。その後、王宮を訪れる機会が主人公に訪れます。王宮では、なぜか友人の許嫁が、宮女の一人としてそこで働いていました。彼女に何があったのか、彼女は主人公に真実を語ります・・・。
「舞姫」「うたかたの記」と共にドイツ3部作の一つ、美しい文語体の文章が織りなす森鷗外の傑作

森鴎外
1862年（文久2年）島根県に生まれる。森家は津和野藩の典医を務めた。10歳の時、父と上京し、官立医学校に入るためにドイツ語を学ぶ。1873年、東京大学医学部に12歳で入学。卒業後は陸軍軍医副になり、東京陸軍病院に勤務し、ドイツの衛生制度を調べるためにドイツに留学。1889年「小説論」、翻訳戯曲を発表するなど軍医でありながら文筆活動をしていた。「陸軍省医務局長まで務めたが、1916年に退官。その後、東京国立博物館に就任。1922年に60歳で死去。
