関ヶ原の合戦で敵の大将首を挙げた男が、四半の布に墨絵で蕪の絵を描いためずらしい差物を持っていたという。その男は、佐和山城主・井伊直政の家臣である余吾源七郎だった。しかし源七郎は、大きな手柄にも関わらず、問われるまで名乗り出ることはなかった。源七郎はそういう男であった。それから数年後、大阪夏の陣が起こる。源七郎は度重なる退却の命令を無視し続けた。しかしそれが突破口となり、大阪城を陥落することに成功する。だが、軍令に背いたとし、源七郎は罪に問われることになる。
大阪夏の陣の際に、源七郎の差物に新たに描かれていた数珠に秘められた切ない祈りと、源七郎のいつまでも変わることのない真っ直ぐな想いとは……？
