About this listen

Here are two things I know about my mother:

  1. She had dark hair, like mine.
  2. She wasn’t very happy at the end.

Anna has always believed that her mother, Debbie, died 30 years ago on the night she disappeared.

But when her father gets a strange note, she realises that she’s never been told the full story of what happened that night on the cliff.

Confused and upset, Anna turns to her husband, Jack - but when she finds a love letter from another woman in his wallet, she realises there’s no-one left to help her, least of all her family.

And then a body is found....

Critic reviews

Praise for Elisabeth Carpenter: "A wonderfully assured debut about every parent’s darkest nightmare - expertly weaving a family’s story together with a real sense of tension and some great twists. Highly recommended." (TM Logan, best-selling author of Lies)

"An intense domestic thriller, twists and turns galore, and a host of family secrets. An absorbing read." (Paul Finch, best-selling author of Strangers)

"Libby Carpenter's beautiful writing draws you in immediately. Her characterisation is superb, and she skillfully delivers a pacey, suspenseful plot. 99 Red Balloons is an intelligent, taut and compelling thriller that manages to pack a punch - and still throws you right at the end. It's perfect - I loved every word." (Sam Carrington, best-selling author of Saving Sophie)

Not very well put together, more highly unrealistic plot devices than I could excuse really.

I don’t know if the narration or writing was at fault, but it was often difficult to keep track of which character I was hearing from.

Didn’t really work for me

This is not a psychological drama as many other reviewers have also pointed out, but a story of a woman finding out what happened to her depressed mum. It switches between the two women and the narration for both is very good, as is the other characters. There is no tension but it is an interesting story, let down by a neat and tidy, unrealistic ending

Not as advertised

Really good storyline, keeps you interested all through and easy to warm to the characters ... but I was waiting for more, right up to the last words of the last chapter
Maybe I was spoilt with "99 red balloons"
All that said its definitely worth a read

It's good to shed light on the themes of post natal depression and being new parents etc but I just didn't like the story much and the presenter wasn't that into it. just read the book out loud basically

okay story not really for me
