About this listen

Bailey is a young, aspiring actress that has never had a real acting job besides a role in a high school play.

But when she sees an ad for a production that takes place in 1954, she decides to take a chance.

The only thing she knows is that it is fully immersive, and would require her to live in the fictional town for one full year. The rules are simple, stay in character and she gets a nice payout of more than one hundred thousand dollars. But would a black woman willingly live in the 50s?

Having been listening to audiobooks for more than a decade, this is the first time I have felt moved enough to write a review. Pepper Pace is an engaging storyteller and I think this is the finest I have listened to of hers. The way the main characters’ experiences became blurry was mirrored in the way the narration unfolded, to the extent that at times I couldn’t tell whether the main characters were “in character” or not. This only added to the unputdownable experience. The tapestry of all the character arcs gave enough depth to make the minor characters interesting without taking over, and the story itself, although not a novel concept, expertly wove themes of reality TV, voyeurism, historical fiction and interracial love into a rich and unique story. My only disappointment was that the ending felt abrupt, although it did leave room for a sequel or , hopefully, a series!

Incredible storytelling
