About this listen

We all need inspiration to lead lives that honor God. When our faith is weak or the pressures of the world seem overwhelming, remembering the great men and women of the past can inspire us to renewed strength and purpose. Our spiritual struggles are not new, and the stories of those who have gone before can help lead the way to our own victories.

Combining the stories of 50 of these faithful men and women, beloved author Warren W. Wiersbe offers you insight and encouragement for life's uncertain journey.

Compulsive listening! Well chosen subjects and an honest appraisal of the life and times of each. I loved it!

On the whole a very edifying summary of a good mixture of evangelical saints.

Good!

Challenging. Inspiring. Centrality of God's Word uppermost. Avoidance of modernism and ritualism strongly advised.

An inspiring read

Such a variety of Christian mini-bios. Well told and such a challenge. I knew probably less than half of these 50 Christians so it has been so good to learn of how the Lord both raised up and greattly used many of these believers. I have both audio and kindle versions of this work. It will be well worth listening to again in a few months.

The book focuses pretty much on these 50 people mostly from a perspective of preaching, the art of good preaching, & good Bible exposition. Nevertheless it’s worth pointing out that the author’s recommendation of different volumes of each person’s book is very impressive - he’s a well-read man on the chosen subject. Went on to listen to this book as a result, which was fantastic: Hudson Taylor: The Man Who Believed God. Both are highly recommended

Not bad but niche. The title is misleading and should read 50 evangelicals every Christian should know.

Should be titled 50 preachers every Christian should know.

Not quite what I expected. My fault I dare say. For some reason I told myself that this was about biblical characters, but it is actually about ‘famous’ preachers and pastors… people of whom I have no desire to know anything about!

Mistook this book…

The content of this book is engaging, the stories captivating (some more so than others). However, as a British person, this book was sadly ruined for me by the American pronunciations of well known British names and places. For example, Bournemouth (which an English person would pronounce Born-muth) was pronounced as Born-nee-mow-th. It made it terrible difficult to concentrate. The majority of the 50 people in this book are British, so for there to be so many words and names pronounced wrongly made me want to scream. (Hampshire and Cambridge he got right. So if he can pronounce Hampshire, it is a shame he couldn't pronouce Shropshire - Shrop-shy-yar. Edinburgh is Edin-borrow, not Edin-brer, Birmingham is BIR-ming-HAM not Birming'um, Durham is Dour-ram not Duh-r'm, Torquay is Tor-kay not Tor-key. And as for names, George Whitefield is pronouced White-field not Whit-field, Burrell is Boo-relle not Buh-rul... I could go on and on.) I can only compare it to an American having to listen to a Brit pronounce Yosemite as Yussy-might instead of Yo-sem-it-tee over and over again. It totally wrecked the book for me.

Interesting but....
