Eleanor Trewynn is a recently retired widow who has moved to the small village of Port Mabyn in Cornwall. Neither frail nor retiring, after a lifetime of traveling the world, she's ready for an uneventful life with her dog and friends in this quiet town. Unfortunately, excitement seems to happen around her.

Her friend and neighbor, artist Nick Gresham, returns from a trip only to find several of his paintings slashed, reportedly by rival local artist Geoffrey Clarke. When Nick goes to have it out with him, with Eleanor in tow, they find Clarke's body in his studio, fatally stabbed in the back. Accused of the crime, Nick ends up in jail, while Detective Inspector Scumble and DS Megan Pencarrow, Eleanor's niece, investigate. But in A Colourful Death, the second Cornish Mystery from Carola Dunn, Eleanor isn't leaving anything to chance - she starts doing a little investigating of her own, and soon learns that Nick is far from the only one with a compelling motive for murder.

I love Carola Dunn's books but with this book was quite disappointed. It was blatantly obvious from the very beginning who the murderer was and was so odd why all the characters kept going around in circles like it was a huge mystery - especially when they're portrayed as clever and insightful. I spent the entire book waiting in frustration for the characters to catch up.

My first of Carola Dunn’s non-DD novels.

I really enjoyed it, similar to DD in that the writing is gentle and unassuming. Lots of period detail, interesting characters and a pleasant diversion. It wasn’t massively thought provoking, but it wasn’t meant to be. Very pleasant. Unfortunately, although the narration was very good, the recording (like on some other Blackstone audiobooks) had a few continuity errors, places with the same line repeated twice etc. This didn’t bother me too much, but some people might find it annoying. Overall, pleasantly satisfying.

The prolific Carola Dunn has done pretty well, as usual. But the narration is not good; only one character, the perpetually rude and irritable police inspector, has a distinctive voice; everyone else sounds so similar that conversations often become confusing.

As soon as I had listened to 'Manna from Hades', I moved onto this title. Very enjoyable.
Again, a few odd pronunciations but on balance pretty good.

Even though I guessed the killer early I still enjoyed the Agatha Christie type story. Easy to listen to and not complicated at all.

Struggled to finish it. I kept hoping it was going to get better but unfortunately found the story two dimential. I enjoy a bit of fluff and also a good thriller, this didn't hit either mark.

I chose this for an easy listen, and it certainly was. I think the first in the series was better, but I would not pay for any of them. For a free listen on audible plus whilst doing other things it was ok.
