About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of A Cornish Summer, written by Catherine Alliott and read by Gemma Whelan.

Flora's been in love with her husband for 20 years.

The trouble is, he's been married to someone else for the past 15.

Now she's been invited to spend the summer in the shady lanes and sandy coves of Cornwall. It should be blissful.

There's just one small snag: she'll be staying with her former mother-in-law, Belinda.

And Flora discovers she's not the only one invited when her ex-husband shows up out of the blue, complete with his new wife. So now there are two small snags.

Can Flora spend the summer playing happy families with the woman who stole her husband's heart, and the mother-in-law who might have had a hand in it?

Or will stumbling on the family secret change her mind about them all?

Took a while to get going , wondered where the story was .... it’s the sort of book that’s enjoyable as it has a sunny Cornish setting and is lighthearted , but if you miss a few chapters (due to falling asleep whilst bedtime listening!), then it doesn’t really matter too much. The characters are interesting but a bit one dimensional and the main character, Flora, is written as though she is in her 50’s but looking at the timeline she must only be around 39ish.... she comes across as being quite old and fuddy Duddy. That said, an enjoyable listen.

Lovely summer feel

This Catherine Alliott seems to have been dealing with environmental issues, is she trying to do her bit to save the world? She seems to want to raise awareness around pollution of sea waters on the Cornish Coast with sewage, admirable though it may be, I found this unsavoury and not the escapism I've come to expect from her! That said, it was written with her usual skill and charm and given its content it's not too bad. Not great but not bad either, I usually re-listen to her books, not sure I will with this one.

Not what I was expecting

Sophisticated story nearly tied together and resolved! I certainly couldn’t predict what was going to happen in the plot.

Catherine at her best. She is a great writer, often writing humorous scenes, and there is humour in this book, but also complexity and depth. The narrator also does a good job here.

Excellent book

I’ve always liked Catherine Alliott’s books but sadly not this one. I just could not follow the story and I gave up after about chapter 3. The story just didn’t flow, jumping from one thing to another and never really fully describing the characters and their lives. I would not recommend this book.

Not for me
