About this listen

That which does not kill you... only makes them try harder...

When the body of a celebrity author, recently returned to the Isle of Skye seemingly to live out his remaining days, is found on Staffin Beach, D.I. Duncan McAdam is left with a mystery to solve.

The circumstances of his last days along with his death prove to be a mystery. How did this man meet his end on the sands of An Corran Beach at dawn? The case generates a great deal of interest in the media, putting a spotlight on Duncan and his team. Little does Duncan know how many people have been keeping secrets on the island. Secrets that some thought—and many hoped—would never come into the light.

As Duncan uncovers a darker side to his beloved Misty Isle, he finds the investigation coming closer to home. The life on Skye he escaped from all those years ago may not have been quite what he thought it was. As the investigation develops, Duncan begins to question not only who he can trust but also to what extent his own experiences have been manipulated by the deeds of the past.

What is it that happened on The Rock all those years ago that no one dares to speak of?

A Dead Man on Staffin Beach is the fifth book in the #1 bestselling Misty Isle series from the multi-million selling crime writer, J M Dalgliesh, the author of the Hidden Norfolk and Dark Yorkshire books.

As with most books in the series it is an easy to listen, well told story for most of the time. Good characters, many leads... all seems to be prepared for a rewarding and wistful conclusion... but once again it didn't come through. The hoped for twist never happened and it followed the same pattern as the last books towards a foreseeable ending.
it's almost as if the writer needed to cut the story short at one point because he had something better to do :D
I'll stick with the series in hope...
Mr. King was as excellent as ever, even though sometimes I wasn't sure if it was Alistair or Duncan speaking.

Good plot, weak ending

Loved this so much I listened to it all in one go. Great story and characters brought to life by the awesome Angus King.

Probably the best yet!

I enjoyed it but mainly because I like Angus King’s narration however the story was very predictable and the DCI was quite stupid

I have enjoyed all of the books in this series. I like hearing about the Isle of Skye and Angus King’s narration just adds to it.

Good story, well narrated

I do so want to like DI Duncan McAdam but I find Alistair, his DS a much stronger and likeable character. I think his back story would be interesting. Had a skim through the 4 previous books before starting this one to remind myself of the timelines and as with all the series, the plot does twist and turn pleasingly, particularly towards the conclusion of the case. However, as another reviewer has commented, the ending leaves a rather bitter taste regarding Duncan's final actions, and indeed I needed all my willpower not to arch my eyebrows! (I'll say no more to spoil it - but I did expect more of him).

A Misty Isle murky past

Although I enjoyed this story in the series, it was a little predictable and even the mellifluous Mr King couldn’t help with the pace which was slow.

Beautiful Skye

This is the best book so far. Sadly the story winds around a predictable and sad story arch but it’s told well. Good characters. Great setting. Good narration.

Sadly a predictable story arch but good
