What superb freshness in this brilliant story. I was engaged from the beginning and held to the end. Narration and characterization was brilliant. Can’t wait for next book.

Born in 1983, one of eight siblings, to a beautiful mother but brutal father in the slums of North Eastern Brazil, Angelito was always determined to have more, to leave that place and that life of poverty, scavenging and babies. For which, she needed money. At four, she learned the art of picking pockets from two older brothers, at eight, she began to realize she had power to influence and by fourteen was already running a small protection racket amongst local shopkeepers. But it was never enough...

A Destiny to Die For, charts Angelita's journey as she attempts the near impossible: to drag herself into a better, more comfortable and secure life. She will do whatever she has to in order to 'check out and leave', from stealing to dealing and more, but not prositution. It's an unforgiving world: she sees loved ones disappear and she tries to insure that she will be safe, but there's always danger lurking.
This is an harrowing story about despair and growing up with nothing, not even hope (Angelina's father was a licenced scavenger, allowing him to search rubbish dumps for salab!e items) and the characters drawn feel very real. Despite that, the story is vibrant, unexpected, not fast moving but always with an underlying tension. Narrator Stephanie Montalvo gives an excellent performance, telling her story in the first person as 'Little Angel', giving increased identity to all of the protagonists with separate voicings and reading throughout with careful emotion and story understanding. She truly becomes Angelita.

It is a different type of thriller than I had been expecting when I requested a copy from the rights holder via Audiobook Boom - and my thanks for the complimentary copy freely gifted to me - and in many ways more powerful because of it. Like the characters featured, it felt real. Well written, it always held my attention, never dragged and, despite not actually liking the main protagonist, my sympathies were always with her, willing her on to succeed. A powerful book with a second one to fellow. I will be looking out for that one certainly. And I recommend A Destiny to Die For as essential reading for everyone: perhaps it would make us all appreciate just fortunate we are.

Me, little bigshot
