About this listen
In the first novel of an explosive new series from K. J. Charles, a young gentleman and his elegant mentor fight for love in a world of wealth, power, and manipulation. When he learns that he could be the heir to an unexpected fortune, Harry Vane rejects his past as a radical fighting for government reform and sets about wooing his lovely cousin. But his heart is captured instead by the most beautiful, chic man he’s ever met: the dandy tasked with instructing him in the manners and style of the ton. Harry’s new station demands conformity - yet the one thing he desires is a taste of the wrong pair of lips. After witnessing firsthand the horrors of Waterloo, Julius Norreys sought refuge behind the luxurious facade of the upper crust. Now he concerns himself exclusively with the cut of his coat and the quality of his boots. And yet his protégé is so unblemished by cynicism that he inspires the first flare of genuine desire Julius has felt in years. He cannot protect Harry from the worst excesses of society. But together they can withstand the high price of passion.

My main reason for leaving this review is a message to the narrator. He is always truly excellent, the way he does the different voices brings so much to the story, and his pronunciation is mostly on point. There's just one thing that I'd implore him to rectify in future readings, and it's his pronunciation of the word valet.
In every book I've listened to with Matthew's narration, he pronounces "valet" as "vallé", which is how you would expect it to be said if prouncing a French word properly, but is not, in fact, how gentlemen would pronounce it. The word is correctly pronounced more like "vallit", for whatever reason (probably Englishmen at the time not wishing to sound French).
It's only a small matter, but, due to the historical setting, it is said so many times! Each instance takes me out of my immersion and I find myself saying aloud "valet" to correct the sound in my brain every time. It's the only thing that spoils a brilliant story and near-perfect narration.
I'm sadly reluctant to buy the next audiobook in the series because one of the main characters is a valet and I don't think I can bear it so often throughout an entire book.
My message to the narrator is this: Please say it differently in future books, so that I don't have to hesitate at your name and so that you can be fully my favourite narrator! Thank you so much, you are wonderful.

What did you like most about A Fashionable Indulgence?
The historical content is superbly and meticulously researched and the sensual relationship between the main characters is off the scale. What other book might you compare A Fashionable Indulgence to, and why?
Other than A Seditious Affair by the the same author, I have none to compare it with.Which scene did you most enjoy?
I can't pinpoint one - the whole book from start to finish is simply superb.Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It was a very moving read/listen, I cried more than I laughed.Any additional comments?
The narrator, Matthew Lloyd Davies, performed rather than read the characters' parts. He is a very talented actor, in the wrong hands this would have been a disaster. He captured the real and growing love between the protagonists in a most tender and sensual manner. One of my best reads/listens of 2015 topped possibly by A Seditious Affair.Absolutely terrific!
