Summary

Combat, love and sacrifice from the twilight of the war in this classic thriller of WW2 adventure.

The occupied Channel Islands: the last outpost of German resistance at the end of a long and savage conflict. Most feared among them: St Pierre. The mid-Atlantic fortress chosen by a crazed SS Commandant for his suicidal stand.

With Berlin on the verge of capture, it is the most sensitive mission of the war.

An end game that calls for a hero – with something else besides. A game for a battle-hardened veteran ready to lay down his life for his birthplace. And for the woman he left behind…

A super story.

My first Jack Higgins book. It was a good story. Excellently narrated by Guy Mott. His delivery was so professional, his accents so accurate and the quick switch between characters so smoothly carried out that it seemed like a multi cast production. I must confess though, I didn’t like “our hero” very much as a person. But on reflection I think that was what Mr Higgins intended. So my mild dislike of him was Almost immaterial because he and all the other characters were well rounded and three dimensional. Very believable as the complex mix of people struggling after six years of war. I can highly recommend this book if you like action packed adventure stories.
