A shadow war rages on between man and the infamous Reaper. Will thirteen-year-old, Ian Grim, mark its end or cause an all-new devastating beginning?
Something was off about Ian. He knew it. Everybody knew it! Why else did the kids at school go about whispering behind his back and throwing him dirty looks? He was used to it by now. But everything takes a turn for the worse when his mom goes missing one night and his dad tries to kill him.
While on the run, Ian will learn the secret about his family and of the Ridirean Anam—Soul Knights who use their spirits to fight dark creatures threatening to overrun the world. Ian's journey will take him through the Passing (a place between the physical and spiritual world) to reach the Forest of Hollow. An intriguing introduction to a what I hope will be a long series
I instantly became invested in the story, characters and the new world we were introduced to and couldn't stop listening!
The narrator was absolutely fantastic too and brought the characters to life perfectly, I'll definitely be seeking out and listening to more books narrated by him.
I can't wait for the next installment and to find out what lies in store for Ian Grim and his friends.

A good story. Worth a credit.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. The story and narration grabbed my attention from the beginning and held it.
The author skipped many of the pitfalls that new fantasy authors tend to fall into. There was sufficient world-building and no glaring plot holes to jar the fantasy.
My only criticism is that it was a bit too "young" for me - but I am well aware that I am not the target audience. As a reader in my 50s, I found the teen and pre-teen protagonists unbelievably young (or, more accurately, unbelievably mature and capable) when one was reminded of their ages. I don't think that this will bother the target audience at all.
The narrator was good. There were a couple of voices that I found grating (particularly the falsetto ones) and a few instances of what I thought were misplaced emphasis in the reading, but not many and i would certainly listen to other books narrated by Jamie Treselyan again.
I was offered a free copy of the second volume, but decided that the author and narrator deserved paying for their work, so I spent a credit on it, instead. A couple of hours in, I have not regretted it so far...
