About this listen

Laurel and Jeremy Calloway have longed for a new life away from the chaos and confusion of New York City. Driving along a country road in New Jersey with a young real estate agent in the back seat, they almost miss it: a small house in the woods for sale.

Laurel immediately thinks this could be the house for them - the house of their dreams, where a simpler life awaits. Laurel can finish her debut novel. Jeremy can look for a job in Philadelphia, just an hour away.

Stopping to take a look at the property, they meet the house's caretaker, Eileen, and within a few weeks, they find themselves the very lucky owners of their ideal home.

But who are the mysterious old couple who'd put the house up for sale, having moved out months ago? Is Eileen more than a friendly neighbor? Who are the townspeople they meet, who all seem aware of the young couple now living in the house in the woods? And is it the house of their dreams, or of their nightmares?

A psychological haunting

I received this a free book form the author and wasn't sure what to expect but I can't resist a freebie.
A house in the woods is a 'haunted house'/psychological thriller of a book with (small) traces of Amityville and the atmospheric strangeness of 'Stepford' all emotionally read by a good narrator.

People are strange, when youre a stranger

New to town, with husband alone. Laurel is having a bit of a time settling in to her new home. For the people around town seem to be acting kind of strange, and talking as if theyre hiding something unsettling and dangerous from Laurel. But she has a neighbor that's very kind! Right.....? And to top it all off, there's something in the basement ....

This was a spooky one. Which means, of course, that i loved it ! :-D
Its quite short, almost a short story. But I'd contend that it just didn't wear out its welcome. I feel it didnt need anything more. I mean it could have, but it was not necessary in this instance.
Idk. I always have a tough time going into "characters" and all that stuff in great, clinical detail. I just know that i really liked it and none of the characters got on my nerves at all so thats awesome.
Plus, theres a sweet pupper in the story as well :)
The narration was good. It fit well.
So Id say, pick this one up. Its pretty cool, evil in a small town story. :)

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review

A Chilling Read

I got my audiobook via a promo code and this is my voluntary review.

Laurel is beginning to mentally uncouple from sanity. This New Jersey house appeals to Laurel and Jeremy because they want to leave the city.Their real estate agent tries to talk them out of buying it, but Laurel is adamant that this is the house for her. Throughout the narrative, there are signs that something is amiss, but Laurel perseveres and begins to make the house her own. I was so engrossed in the narrative that I had the impression that Laurel and Jeremy were standing right behind me. I've never read anything else by Mark McNease, but I absolutely can not wait to pick up another of his titles.

Daniela Acitelli gave a fantastic performance in this story. She did a good job of describing the tension that occasionally had me on the edge of my seat.
