About this listen

How do we begin to describe our love for our children? Pamela Richardson shows us with her passionate memoir of life with and without her estranged son, Dash.

From age five Dash suffered Parental Alienation Syndrome at the hands of his father. Indoctrinated to believe his mother had abandoned him, after years of monitored phone calls and impeded access eight-year-old Dash decided he didn't want to be "forced" to visit her at all; later he told her he would never see her again if she took the case to court. But he didn't count on his indefatigable mother's fierce love. For eight more years Pamela battled Dash's father, the legal system, their psychologist, the school system, and Dash himself to try and protect her son - first from his father, then from himself.

A Kidnapped Mind is a heartrending and mesmerizing story of a Canadian mother's exile from and reunion with her child, through grief and beyond, to peace.

Editor reviews

Divorce can be sad and confusing enough but when a parent puts their own feelings before the welfare of their child, even manipulating and lying to the child in order to hurt the other parent, things can take a turn for the tragic. This is the story of Dash, a boy who sadly suffered just such a situation. His mother, Pamela Richardson, recounts her son’s struggles and her own, in an attempt to expose what has been termed "Parental Alienation Syndrome" and to aid parents and family law professionals who may encounter it. Julie Eickoff gives a steady and heartfelt performance of the audiobook, elucidating the subject matter while being respectful of its unfortunately real and personal source.

Captivating story! Couldn’t put it down…was very touched by this story and bought awareness of how parents influence their children.

Incredible touching story of bravery and sadness

While it is true that this is a harrowing story of a child’s confusion and bewilderment it is also true that Pamela had every advantage that most parents finding themselves in a similar situation do not have. A loving husband and a bottomless cash supply or so it seems. She can go to court, have lawyers on call all day every day and still splash out several hundred thousand on holidays and schools combined. Still, it is a story of the miscarriage of justic, a sociopath in the extreme and a mother’s fight to save her son which she ultimately loses. The narration is a bit flat and emotionless but the story is one that has to be told although, I do wonder how the rank an file would get on in similar circumstances and i fear that most would never be able to afford to do what Pamela did and would lose their children before it even went to court and that’s really the travesty of this book.

I wouldn’t mind some of her money

I’ve finished this book in 24 hours, I couldn’t put it down and I cried throughout! It’s disgusting how much this mother and her son was let down by the system and how sick and driven some people are in making the life of their ex , pure hell.
After I finished the book I still feel so much anger, borderline rage for this mother and her son.

Heartbreaking

This book just fills you with rage from start to finish. What this poor boy and his mum went through is absolutely horrific. She has shown immense bravery for writing about her experiences and the hook is a credit to her. My husband has children with a previous partner and she used PA all the time. It is a terrible form of abuse and hopefully this book will make some people stop and think. RIP Dasch.

Infuriating

As a loving mother separated from her children after my narcissistic husband messed with our lives for years… this book HIT HOME stuck we are when all we offer is our love. In my 49 years on this earth, it’s only now I’m figuring out that evil people really do walk very closely among us. I wanted to scream and cry and shout from the rooftops for this messed up story… that way too many of us live with… what is the answer?
