North Yorkshire, September 1939.

Rosina Calvert-Lazenby, the only surviving member of her family and widowed by forty-four, has lived at Raven Hall all her life. With war approaching, Rosina must be strong for her daughters, five confident young women who are thick as thieves.

Really enjoyed the characters and the story - nothing too challenging or heart rending so was a nice break from the last few I read. The narrator was excellent! So much so that I have to assume the two or three pronunciation howlers were simply a deliberate giggle! (Can’t remember them all, but “gauche” pronounced “gorsh” made me snort in a most unladylike way…)

Wow, this book is truly an excellent piece of work. Firstly it's very easy to get into the story and understand the characters which is always a big bonus for many readers. But it's how this story is presented and the depth of the characters that makes this an exceptional book. It truly is worth reading this book and although there are endless books out there covering world war two, many of which I have found very enjoyable but this one truly does stand out from the rest. Why this is? you need to read it as it's something I cannot put into words. All I can say is if you miss out on this title it would be such a shame as it's such a rewarding read. Also I cannot forget to comment that the narration was of great quality too

This was a lovely heartwarming story of war. The book starts at the beginning of World War II and tells the story of Rosina, a mother of five daughters. The characters in the book were so real and likeable. This story shows how even during a war people can look after one another and work together as a community. I especially loved the characters of Grace and Nancy and their friendship and I loved the characters of Rosina and Harry. It is such a lovely story filled with good people and kindness . I found the story so easy to get into and listen too. And the fabulous narration of Lu Corfield, her voice so lovely and warm and the characters voices were great. I can't wait to listen to the next two books in this trilogy! 🌸

Once again another book that not only tells a really good story but lets you into our country’s history. Also well narrated, definitely recommend.

Brilliant and educational

This is an enjoyable and well written book, with believable, well rounded, characters (whom I quickly became attached to) . The first book in the series, introduces the reader to the characters and their home, 'Raven Hall', as well as the Yorkshire scenery and the atmosphere of the country at the beginning of World War II. The focus is, for the most part, upon two protagonists.
The first being, Rosina, a widow, of an unhappy marriage, and the loving mother of five daughters. Known locally as, "The Lady of the House", Raven Hall, she is a kind-hearted employer, respected by both her large staff and her tenants. However, it isn't long before the servants leave to join the war effort. Rosina finds herself left to cope with just her faithful cook and an elderly gardener, which is when a contingent from the RAF, who are building a secret listening station, locally, arrive. Her, 'duty' is to see that they are fed regular meals whilst the work is under way. They are lead by a rather charismatic young officer whom Rosina finds, to her mortification, herself unwillingly attracted to.
Gracie, the other protagonist, is Rosina's eldest daughter. Shy, and often feeling socially inept, she surprises her family by taking on the challenge of joining the WRNS (Wrens). Whist training for work so secret she cannot even tell her mother what she does, she also begins to learn lessons about life and the lives of those around her, all very different from the cloistered one she's known so far.
I loved the story, was enthralled and entranced by the characters and the setting and can't wait for the next one.

this is a lovely story and read beautifully a good story of the war and great how different people come together at the times

I tried but I just could not get into it.
it could have got better if I had stuck with it but where I find most of the books I have selected hard to put down. This one just did not do it for me. so far there was no detail of Grace's Job or maybe I just missed it.
The Narrator's voice for me too high pitched.
