A little slow in places but it falls into place when the plot twist is revealed at the end. If anyone struggles please know it makes sense when you see the bigger picture. I can say its well worth it. I am looking forward to the next book.

I'm really enjoying this series and it may just have surpassed Rites of Possession for me; this particular book has finally made me forgive and forget about a certain character from that series after the explosive ending! The overall mythology is still my favourite element though; I'm eating up every detail.

The twists are well plotted and go in spoiler free as it is so worth it. The trial aspect is different to the first book and we get to see Aurelia working to put her plan into action after the events of book one. The relationships with the other princes were on the backburner a little and the pace slowed down a bit in the middle but I did like how it meant we saw more of Marclinus beyond the straight up and down villain he was in book one. I'm definitely looking forward to book three.

After reading this on release, I received a copy of the audiobook and wow, the clues were there. That's all I'm saying! I really enjoyed Meg Sylvan's narration; she plays Aurelia with such restraint in her public persona and I loved when we saw the flashes of rage in her internal monologue. This is a dual narration but both narrators do excellent male and female voicework; Sylvan's Marclinus was so good!

My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read
