Summary

Nominated for the Audiobook Download of the Year, 2008.

You heard it here first: The unabridged edition of A Prisoner of Birth is only available as a download.

This download also includes an interview with Jeffrey Archer about A Prisoner of Birth.

Danny Cartwright and Spencer Craig were born on different sides of the track.

Danny, an East End Cockney, leaves Clement Attlee Comprehensive School at the age of 15 to take up a job at a local garage. He falls in love with Beth, the boss's daughter, and asks her to marry him.

Spencer Craig resides in the West End. A graduate of an English public school and Cambridge University, he becomes a criminal barrister and is soon tipped to be the youngest Queen's Counsel of his generation.

Danny and Beth travel up to the West End to celebrate their engagement. They end the evening in a wine bar where Spencer Craig is also celebrating - his 30th birthday, along with a select group of university chums.

Their lives will never be the same again. For, an hour later, one of them is arrested for murder, while the other ends up as the prosecution's chief witness in an Old Bailey trial.

first Archer, but not my last

This was my first Archer, as I, like other reviewers, thought it would be pulp fiction. How wrong could I be? the story grips fom the start, and develops apparently endlessly, but I just wanted it to carry on. the story has layer upon layer, never bores and always entertains.

Wonderful read

This was a great book. I knew early on that it was going to follow the lines of The Count of Monte Cristo and did feel slightly cheated but I am happy to say that didn't prove to be the case. The turns and twists were great. However there were one or two bits where I thought 'that's silly how could he have known such and such was going to happen and prepared' I felt the end of the book was a bit rushed. Everywhere else had so much detail but the end seemed to be just thrown in there. That said it was a brilliant book and kept me enthralled for hours and hours and am looking forward to the next one. The speaker was also very good and made the book a pleasure to listen too.

Fantastic, brilliant, wonderful

An excellent book by Archer. The Count of Monte Christo is my favourite book ever and I was hoping Archer wouldn’t spoil that with this story. I needn’t have worried. Although a similar plot, it was a great read. On to the Clifton Chronicles next.

Best Audible book yet!

So well written. You really cared about the main characters. The narrator was brilliant and bought all the characters to life. Really couldn’t put it down. It made me cheer and shout out loud more than once. I have never read a Jeffrey Archer book before but it was a daily deal and the reviews were so good I thought I’d give it a go. Sad it’s finished and can’t wait to read another.
Highly recommend

Simply the best.....a masterpiece!

I have always rejected a Jeffery Archer book simply because he’s a writer I didn’t think I could relate to. This book was recommended to me, it was my first Jeffery Archer. I’m so glad it was an audio read....I was completely hooked after the prologue.
A master story teller, so much detail I could imagine all, I could place myself in every nook and cranny, my heart raced, I cried, I laughed, I cheered.
The narrator was a joy to listen to, every accent perfect, he brought the players to life.
I didn’t want it to end....that to me is a sign of pure genius. Thank you Jeffery, I’m almost too afraid to read another of yours, as the bar has been set at such a high level

Immensely enjoyable

My first book from J Archer and I'm very impressed. I really enjoyed the writing style. Roger Allam narrated brilliantly I thought really adding to the book and characters. I had moments of frustration with the main character but think one needs to realise this is not based in 2014 and as a listener am very over exposed to TV program's and other stories. I'm off to find another J Archer book to enjoy.
