About this listen
A Serpent in the Garden is set in London in 1592, with a young Will Shakespeare struggling to pen his newest play, Richard III, made more difficult by the closure of the theatres due to a plague outbreak. Via association with the outspoken Christopher Marlowe, Will is drawn into the shadowy world of Elizabethan espionage. Caught between two of the most powerful men in the country, he's tasked with uncovering the truth behind the mysterious death of a high-ranking lady and rooting out a suspected Popish plot.

Fascinating
I really enjoyed this novel and listened whilst seeing the events unfold in my mind’s eye as if I were watching a film. The writing was brilliant and Alan Turton did a fine job of performing this involving novel. I cringed when Shakespeare mentioned poor maligned Richard III but liked the fact that the playwright wondered if the monarch was as bad as was generally believed under the Tudors. Howard Linskey portrayed Shakespeare as a flawed human thankfully but also admirable in many respects. I am very glad I found this audiobook.
