A Serpent in the Garden is set in London in 1592, with a young Will Shakespeare struggling to pen his newest play, Richard III, made more difficult by the closure of the theatres due to a plague outbreak. Fascinating

I really enjoyed this novel and listened whilst seeing the events unfold in my mind’s eye as if I were watching a film. The writing was brilliant and Alan Turton did a fine job of performing this involving novel. I cringed when Shakespeare mentioned poor maligned Richard III but liked the fact that the playwright wondered if the monarch was as bad as was generally believed under the Tudors. Howard Linskey portrayed Shakespeare as a flawed human thankfully but also admirable in many respects. I am very glad I found this audiobook.
