Summary

London, 1935. Ruby is always hungry, but she will go without if it means her young brothers can eat. 1930s Bermondsey might be called the larder of London, with its pie, pickle and jam factories, but for the poor working classes, starvation is often only a heartbeat away.

When Ruby's neighbour suggests she ought to go to the Methodist Mission for free food, Ruby knows her father will be furious, but she has no other option. It is a decision that will change the course of her life forever, split her family and in the end lead her to face a terrible choice between duty and a great love.

A heartfelt saga from the best-selling author of Custard Tarts and Broken Hearts.

Wonderful story

This is a story you will not want to put down, a book of love of a daughter and sister to her siblings, but with a shocking revelation, this proved to be both sad , and so happy at the end, a must listen to story

brilliant book

one of those books that you get emerged into the story and hate when it ends...a great insight into the struggle of pre war england and the upsurge of the black shirt facist and its effect on family lives.

Ruby’s struggle

A great feel good story, easy listening and lovingly read by Ann Dover whose voices are faultless.

Based in Bermondsey in the pre war years. The rise of the fascist under Moseley was weaved throughout as well as the poverty and mayhem of this impoverished London borough. However the sense of family and friends in the same situation overrides the doom and gloom.

I need these lighter books after the more heavy going books and just generally for a lighter life.

stick with it through to the wonderful conclusion

This was a lovely story then it seemed to drag a little for a short while but I preserved and wow was it worth it! it turned out to be a truly surprising and heartwarming story. ilI can say little more than this as I'd hate to ruin the next listeners experience of it. Definitely worth a listen though.
