About this listen

You're not to disturb, annoy or offend. They're walking on a knife edge out there, anything could tilt the balance.' Missing: one junior diplomat and 43 of the British Embassy's most confidential files. The timing is alarmingly significant: with neo-Nazi riots and radical student demonstrations, the threat to Germany's security is all too apparent. Britain's own Alan Turner is sent in, with instructions to tread carefully at all costs. But will he find the missing man and the files before the political situation erupts?

Kenneth Haigh stars as Alan Turner with Bernard Hepton as Rawley Bradfield in a fast-paced, explosive dramatisation of John le Carré's acclaimed spy story, dramatised by René Basilico.

A beautifully crafted narrative brought expertly to life. Too short! Alan Tailor would make a great character for a series. The antithesis of George Smiley.

Superb

If you loved Smiley, you may find Alan Turner a less sympathetic but no less engaging figure, hunting cold War moles. I must say I thought the bluff no nonsense character of Turner a great counterpoint to the always urbane unflappable character's we usually encounter in Le Carre's books. Witty, angry and at times just plain rude, Turner turns over all our expectations on what a spy hunter should be. You'll be riveted, I was.

Another classic from the master spy author

Any additional comments?

Le Carre is a consistently adept storyteller and his earlier novels now have the added appeal of nostalgia, in this case the civil unrest of the late 1960s. This dramatisation is unusual for a Le Carre spy story both in terms of its protagonist and adversary. The protagonist comes across as far more working class than the usual public school Le Carre spies and the adversary, a resurgent neo-Nazi group, is far less plausible than the Moscow Centre characters we are familiar with from the other novels. But it’s an engaging story and is well worth a listen.

Good but not classic Le Carre

Honestly, I hope someone from the BBC (production company reads this). Your audio dramas of John me Carew are absolutely world-class. Please please as a license fee payer and as someone who buys these audio dramas, please do all of John le Carres novels. From acting to music, length to production, it’s absolutely incredible. Many many thanks.

BBC, please do more le Carre audio dramas

A classic cold war thriller from John le Carre. Excellent dramatisation of an engaging story and brought to life by a great cast. I found the storyline had a sense of realism and atmosphere, which made it more enthralling.

Classic cold war thriller.
