About this listen

Amidst the terror of the Second World War, seventeen-year-old Eliza and her troubled little sister, Rebecca, have had their share of tragedy, losing their mother to the Blitz and their father to suicide. But when they are forced to leave London to work for the mysterious Mr Brownawell at Abigale Hall, they find that the worst is yet to come....

There are tales that the ghost of Mr Brownawell's bride-to-be haunts the desolate mansion, and in the village there are shocking rumours of maidservants meeting terrible fates within its walls. But is it superstition that Eliza should be afraid of, or is there something real and deadly lurking in the dark, dusty rooms of Abigale Hall?

Vicious, coldhearted housekeeper Mrs Pollard will stop at nothing to keep the mansion's terrible secrets, and she exerts a twisted hold over Rebecca. To save herself and her sister from descending into madness, Eliza must wage a desperate battle to escape back to London and uncover the horrifying truth before Abigale Hall claims two more victims.

Taut and suspenseful, Abigale Hall is a thrilling debut from Lauren A. Forry.

Nothing exceptional here although the first half was suspenseful mystery and kept me listening no trouble at all. It seemed to spiral into chaos and a psychological horror genre that felt at odds with the beginning of the story. A shame too characters weren’t developed sufficiently; I didn’t care about any of them particularly.

In short, it’s a good enough read with a pretty exceptional promising start that gets a tad crazy.

Great presentation.

Not bad for a gothic tale

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely, Abigale Hall is a dark and twisty mystery. Set in a crumbling and sinister mansion, where nothing is what it seems. The plot is multi-layered and you might think you have it worked out - but you don't.

Chilling and atmospheric debut

Would you try another book written by Lauren A. Forry or narrated by Emma Fenney?

Not if it is being read by the same person. Her constant loud intake of breath after nearly every word is just horrible.

Would you ever listen to anything by Lauren A. Forry again?

Not sure.

How could the performance have been better?

Not to be narrated by this person again and be re-recorded by someone else.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I don't know. I was unable to listen to the whole book due to the narration.

Narration is terrible

Absolutely appalling in every single way. I absolutely and completely hated it. Weak and unbelievable story and a completely unconvincing performance by the narrator. Had the same effect on me as a dreadfully acted film. To be honest it was painful to listen to., and I only managed four, dreadful, chapters. If you are considering this book... Don't! Dreadful, awful, painful and a complete waste of time.

If I could give this zero points, I would

A dreadful story line with sudden ill fitting descriptions and characters who I couldn't get to know. Additionally I'm hard pressed to understand why any author would want Fenney to narrate their work; the breathy, childlike delivery coupled with an irritating sense of doom drove me mad! I couldn't finish this.

The very worst book in every sense!
