I read this when it first came out and decided to buy the audio book when I saw it listed.

It comes across as an ‘old style’ space opera and was surprised to find out it was published in 1996 as i thought it came out earlier.

An interesting idea and good narration, glad I bought it.

I like sci-fi but I also often find the conventional "make contact, anticipate conflict, fight to the death" a bit samey. I didn't know this author before this book, but was drawn to it by reviews saying it develops nicely. It does. The thing that interests me is the non preachy gradual explanation of the moral/philosophy behind a culture. Also the slow build (I like slow!) that allows time for plot to develop.There are some nice almost poetically written sections within it too. The reader is also nicely a subtle and paced in his delivery. Really enjoyed it, rattled through it and now am going to look up the author to see if there are some other good books by him.
