Definitely agree with the other criticisms of the narrator, he’s not the best but not actually irritating. He has little intonation and slurs some of his words. But the actual content is really good. Such a thorough and detailed account of the man himself & told without prejudice or personal opinion. I really enjoyed it

This is a lengthy book which I probably wouldn't tackle as a conventional book but found the audio version was easy to listen to in bite size chunks and, for me with an interest in the events of WW11, very informative.
Congratulations to the narrator who stuck at it for 40+ hours with an easy to listen to tone.

Never before whilst listening to the story of a life have I experienced such a feeling of sadness of the inevitability of the fate of the vast number of people whose lives were affected by this one person. So much pain, loss, destruction, waste of human life and valuable resources to feed the insatiable hunger of hatred.
As an educational exercise this book is a masterpiece.

More impartial than Kershaw. More detailed than Simms. Toland has a fine, lively style. Recommended listening or reading.

Possibly the best Hitler biography in English

Like looking over the shoulder of the deluded dictator, and illuminating, interesting and exciting. Paints a picture of his messianic mind-set, and the belief in a star or fate interestingly also shared by Churchill, Napoleon and many other leaders through history. So we get to know him though he is difficult to truly understand due to his fanaticism, though his fears and rationale are revealed as well as they perhaps can be. Reminds us that, beyond his famous evils he was also boring, being intellectually and generally narrow minded and obsessed only with Germany, to an extent architecture (though like all else this as a way to project his concept German greatness), and his racist views, yet had some kind of courage and magnetism and gained power from nothing, yet was instinctive without expertise (illustrating the danger of ‘gut decisions’ based on hubristic or superstitious whim rather than training). Shows us that a great speaker should not be mistaken for a great leader, general or politician and that the gift of the gab and propaganda can hide devastating deficiencies; that amateurs trying to play dangerous games on the world stage make amateur mistakes that only democracy or similar can slightly filter out. Though we also see how democracies failed when their leaders tried to deal with this bullying liar and how it came back to bite him as ever more of those with the power to defeat him lost trust in everything he said.

Brilliantly read and like a novel

I was a little bit disappointed at the beginning when I realised that this was written such a long time ago. However after a while, I found it interesting to see the whole story from the different perspective that being written in the 70s gives it. The author was able to get first hand accounts from many of those who were still alive at the time. It seemed to me early on that he was being much fairer to Hitler than I would have been, but really the facts speak for themselves and in the end there is no redeeming him.
For me the most illuminating sections deal with his early life, but it kept my attention all the way to the end and there is a lot of it, so that has to be a positive recommendation.
