About this listen

On the night of 22 December 1980, a plane crashes on the Franco-Swiss border and is engulfed in flames. Out of 169 passengers, 168 are killed instantly. The miraculous sole survivor is a newborn baby.

But the identity of the child is unknown, and two families - one rich and affluent, and the other poor - step forward to claim her. So begins a private investigation that wil go on for the next 18 years....

The novel opens on the eve of the girl's 18th birthday. For years now Credule Grand-Duc has been trying to uncover the truth about the child's identity - is she Emilie or Lyse-Rose? And now it seems he has discovered a terrible secret. He plans to take his own life but not before he places his account of the investigation in the girl's hands. However someone else gets to him first....

It is a bit of a step too far to have one narrator doing both male and female voices, but as this is my first audible book, maybe that is par for the course.
I didn't find it intriguing, just irritating and I don't know if that was because all the dates and times were narrated, given equal weight, whereas such detail would just get a quick glance when reading.

Black Water Lillies was full of beautiful descriptive passages and very very clever. This just wasn't as captivating and I only read it as I loved BWL so much.

not as good as black water lillies

This is such a clever story with an unexpected end! The characters are so believable (one of them, Malvina) really made me laugh!) and the performances and voices are brilliant. I’ll miss it!

What a brilliant story! Loved it!

As an audio book It is well produced and read. The plot is entertaining enough and there are some good themes and an interesting narrative. It has a lot of plot holes, but it ultimately has a satisfying conclusion.

Entertaining but full of plot holes

Amidst some excellent twists, suspense, a Parisian backdrop and meaty character development an intriguing tale unwinds.

A great mystery

Good start but felt that it really didn't pick up. The narrator had a great voice which lifted the overall book.
