About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

NARRATED BY COLIN MORGAN, STAR OF BELFAST AND THE BBC TV SERIES MERLIN.

From internationally bestselling author John Boyne, a contemplative story about one man trying to move forward from the trauma of his youth to become a better father to his son.

Being in limbo, 30,000 feet in the air, offers time to reflect and take stock. For Aaron Umber, it’s an opportunity to connect with his 14-year-old son as they travel halfway across the world to meet a woman who isn’t expecting them.

Unsettled by his past, and anxious for his future, Aaron is at a crossroads in life. The damage inflicted upon him during his youth has made him the man he is, but now threatens to widen the growing fissures between him and his only child. This trip could bind them closer together, or tear them further apart.

In this penetrating examination of action and consequence, fault and attribution, acceptance and resolution, John Boyne gives us a redemptive story of a father and a son on a moving journey to mend their troubled lives.

What an amazing and inspiring end to what can only be described as an extraordinary journey through the elements of life.

A beautiful story that brings a sense of peace to your heart.

This book is a great cherry on top. Some of the books in this series have been incredibly hard to read and even to understand why John Boyne chose to take certain characters in a specific direction. But this is perfect. We end where we began. I enjoyed observing the father son relationship and exploring the family dynamics. It’s a great send off to the elements series.

Full circle

'Air' is a deeply satisfying conclusion to an excellent quartet from the incomparable John Boyne. Having listened to the four audiobooks as they were released I am tempted to go back and listen to them all again in order to both enjoy them again but also to link all the pieces of the puzzle that are skilfully embedded within. I would also love to see all four novels published in a single edition and a quality streaming service would be able to make a riveting series for us to further enjoy.

These four books are nothing short of perfect. John Boyne is potentially the best writer alive today. I did t think I could love anything more than the previous three but this is, in my opinion, the absolute best. The father/son relationship is beautiful and believable and the way he wraps it all together is proof of just how good an author he is.

Connection between trilogy

I can only be relieved that the last book in the series brought everything to a conclusion without the horror of the penultimate book in the series. I enjoy John Boyne but, the third book in the element series took me out of my comfort zone. Glad to have felt brave enough to finish this series. Overall, excellent.

A well rounded end

I love John Boyne’s writing and this is a great sequel to the previous three books. It’s not as dark as the previous books, and I had a few chuckles at the banter between father and son. The characters as always are so credible - he deals with very difficult subjects sensitively. Aaron and Emmet are very likeable, Ron too - the rest not so!! You need to start at Book 1.

Part 4 in the series - excellent

I really love John Boyne. Ever since reading the Hearts Invisible Furies I was hooked. This series was a great easy but addictive listen. Narration is brilliant too. Would recommend.

The final book in a brilliant series

Immersive and captivating. Couldn’t stop listening and found myself just standing still to listen and fully engage with the words and intonations. Realistic and engaging characters with humour, sadness and genuine emotion. A love story. About family.

Beautifully written and read
