About this listen

Vermont, 1972. Carole LaPorte has a satisfying, ordinary life. She cares for her children, balances the books for the family's auto shop, and laughs when her husband slow dances her across the kitchen floor. Her tragic childhood might have happened to someone else.

But now her mind is playing tricks on her. The accounts won't reconcile and the murmuring she hears isn't the television. She ought to seek help, but she's terrified of being locked away in a mental hospital like her mother, Solange. So Carole hides her symptoms, withdraws from her family, and unwittingly sets her 11-year-old daughter Alison on a desperate search for meaning and power: in Tarot cards, in omens from a nearby river, and in a mysterious blue glass box belonging to her grandmother. An exploration of the power of courage and love to overcome a damning legacy, All the Best People celebrates the search for identity and grace in the most ordinary lives.

I was surprised at how this story ended and glad I stuck with it.

Spans several generations of women in one family. Really well written and enjoyed the tone of the reader, she did the story justice.

At times sad but interesting.

A great listen

Difficult to think of many upbeat, happy or smile-inducing bits of this book. I found it interesting but at the same time all quite dark and depressing. I was pleased to reach the end but for the wrong reasons. It seemed to be a bit confused about its genre - supernatural? Mystery? Mental health? What was the pearl and the blue box about? I enjoyed the reader and how she breathed life into the characters, but can’t say I’d go all out to recommend this to anyone. Sorry, Sonja.

Don’t read it for fun

I really enjoyed this book, it highlights the differences in womens treatment in mental health issues over the generations, also how some men would use mental health as an excuse to put women into institutions. The barbarity of early mental health treatments making people worse rather than better was also an issue. I didn’t really get the spell casting stuff, but put it down to what young girls may be going through. It wasn’t a major part so no problems. I feel the book ended on a relaxing sigh, as if the issues of the past were now dealt with

This book has a good pace to it. I really wanted to see how it turned out in the. But I didn’t look. Good voice for the narration. All in all, a nice page turner.

I loved how the author showed the characters warts and all. I’m so glad I could just hear their stories, without feeling overly sentimental.
