1943: In den Wirren des Krieges wächst die Bäuerin Alma über sich hinaus. Als ihr Bruder Franz eingezogen wird, führt sie den Hof allein weiter - unterstützt von dem französischen Kriegsgefangenen Robert. Trotz aller Widerstände verlieben sich die beiden ineinander. Alma wird schwanger und damit im Dorf noch mehr zur Außenseiterin. Als der Krieg vorbei ist, kehrt Robert nach Frankreich zurück.
