About this listen

An Almost Impossible Story is a crazy, funny audiobook written and produced specifically for young adults. It is a coming-of-age magical realist work of action, bringing together forty-five different—all of whose voices are performed by the author, George Tombs, in an eight-hour production combining voice, sound effects and music, and maintaining the high production standards George mastered while working for the BBC in the United Kingdom, CBC in Canada and NPR in the United States.

This is a story of love and discovery "against all odds" as experienced by Richard Grey, a boy growing up through adolescence to young adulthood.

But Richard's upbringing is subject to a series of sometimes hilarious sometimes traumatic shocks. For example, his eccentric grandmother Blanche Grieve insists on his wearing a gas mask watching hockey games on TV, because he’s desperately allergic to the cat his sister has brought home from a nearby forest. As he grows into a dreamy, moody teenager, then a young adult, Richard faces many challenges.

First is his sense of alienation. Then there’s his deep-seated anxiety while spending seven years wearing the gas mask and investigating family secrets, including deception, betrayal, ghostly apparitions and helping his mother Augusta overcome her health crises. Then there’s the stress of surviving a raucous on-again-off-again relationship with Chloe Trahan, the girl next door, as he travels between Montreal and Cape Cod getting to know his larger Canadian/American family, and visiting her when she studies abroad.

Deep down, Richard is a kind soul, but he’s not very practical. He has the habit of backing into situations and then trying to figure whatever happened. Will he ever find his place in the world? Will he ever meet with success as a young writer? You will discover, in listening to An Almost Impossible Story, that love itself is truly magical!
