About this listen

Introducing Jonas Flynt. Gambler. Thief. Killer. Man of honor.

1715. Jonas Flynt, ex-soldier and reluctant member of the Company of Rogues, a shady intelligence group run by ruthless spymaster Nathaniel Charters, is ordered to recover a missing document. Its contents could prove devastating in the wrong hands. On her deathbed, the late Queen Anne may have promised the nation to her half-brother James, the Old Pretender, rather than the new king, George I. But the will has been lost. It may decide the fate of the nation. The crown must recover it at all costs. The trail takes Jonas from the dark and dangerous streets of London to an Edinburgh in chaos. He soon realizes there are others on the hunt, and becomes embroiled in a long overdue family reunion, a jail break and a brutal street riot. When secrets finally come to light, about the crown and about his own past, Jonas will learn that some truths, once discovered, can never be untold…

Excellent

I read/listen to a lot of historical fiction and this is up there with the best of them, both the story and the performance. I'll certainly read the whole series.

Descriptive details set the scene

Scenes and locations are set well, enabling the story to flow, told by realistic characters in clever situations and back drops. Loved it. Narration excellent and adds to the story.

Too much violence

This is a good story but I found the violence sickening - enough to put me off reading any more Skelton

Loved this

Couldn't stop listening, historical and fictional sides of the book both, and a great narrator.

Jacobites in their cups!

A good storyline, well written and equally well narrated. The Jacobites never had much luck and this story cleverly weaves into the background the pre-emptive actions that led to 1715 rising. Enough intrigue to keep you guessing, enough history to make you want to read more.

Fascinating!

Really enjoyed this book. I loved the way it was written and David Monteath is one of my favourite Narrators which is always a plus for me when the storyline has even one Scottish person featured. He doesn't make all Scots sound the same, ie like Mel Gibson in Braveheart! The story was interesting and I found myself picturing Edinburgh, in particular, as it was in those days. I also liked Jonas and liking the main character is essential for me if I am to listen/read to the end. Am looking forward to the rest of the series.

Excellent

This is excellent historical fiction. Thoroughly enjoyable plot with excellent narration by David Monteath.
This book has great characters which are cleverly entwined through plots and sub plots throughout the book. In addition the author has expertly described the scenes which gives a sense of the era & setting.
Book 2 is next.
Highly recommend.

A fabulous historical thriller

A fictional storyline based around factual events in Scotland’s past. A set of characters that the author paints a convincing picture of. The protagonist is someone that I found myself warming to and willing to be the hero all good books need. I can imagine this as a
Film or TV show - who would the lead character be portrayed by. I look forward to the next book with much enthusiasm.
