Plucky fourteen-year-old Adunni is in Lagos, excited to finally enrol in school. Having escaped her rural village in a desperate bid to seek a better future, she's found refuge with Tia, a kind and brilliant woman on her own troubled journey of self-discovery.

But it's not so simple to run away from your past.

On the night before she is due to join her new classmates for her first lesson, a terrible knocking at the front gate summons Adunni back to her home village, Ikati, where her dramatic story of resilience first began.

As Tia frantically tries to protect her from an uncertain fate, Adunni must try to save not only herself but all the young women of her village, and transform Ikati into a place where girls are allowed to claim the bright futures they deserve - and roar their stories to the world.

This story was incredibly deep, touching, and moving. It brought to life the experiences of girls and women from small villages in Africa, giving them a powerful voice. It highlighted their stories in a way that made you feel as if you were walking alongside Aduni, the main character. It left me eager to learn more, and I hope there will be a sequel to continue this journey.

Moving and powerful Story

Suspenseful and unpredictable twists along the way. The story telling was so real you could imagine every part of the story vividly. I grew up in Nigeria and I can relate to every aspect of the story.
It brought tears of sadness for the lot of the uneducated girls used as domestic servants( omo odor) as well as tears of joy of victory in persistence of those who ROAR.

Felt soo real

This story brought out all the emotions in me. There were tears, laughter, cheers, etc. I love how vital issues that girls and women face in our communities in Africa were brought to the forefront of the story of Adunni the girl with the louding voice. How the scenes seamlessly connect was absolutely awesome such that there were no dull moment. I find my mind wondering sometimes when a story loses its plot but not with Adunni’s story. Abi Daré is such a beautifully brilliant writer.I look forward to her next work. Thank you for giving us Adunni. Your story has awakened the Adunni in me.

I love that I got to hear Adunni roar!

I agree wholeheartedly with the previous reviewer. This book is so moving and so important. I would advise you to read The Girl with the Louding Voice first so that you understand the context, and simply because it is also a wonderful book. The writing is so warm, accessible and funny, but at the same time heartbreaking and profound. I challenge anyone not to fall in love with the main character, Adunni, and not to learn something from what she has to say. Adjoa Andoh's narration brings the book to life too; the characters are voiced superbly.

Such an important book

I laughed out load - I swore out loud whilst listening in the car. I made mental notes of the sweet wisdoms expressed. I was late for a number off appointments as I would arrive at my destination and would park up to listen further.
