About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Every life is both ordinary and extraordinary, and Logan Mountstuart's - stretching across the 20th century - is a rich tapestry of both. As a writer who finds inspiration with Hemingway in Paris and Virginia Woolf in London, as a spy recruited by Ian Fleming and betrayed in the war and as an art-dealer in '60s New York, Logan mixes with the men and women who shape his times. But as a son, friend, lover and husband, he makes the same mistakes we all do in our search for happiness. Here, then, is the story of a life lived to the full - and a journey deep into a very human heart.

Something a little different - but wonderful

The whole book takes the form of a lifelong journal, and it's engrossing.

The narration is perfectly judged.

All in all, as captivating as ever from our greatest modern author.

Exceptional

Beautifully worded. A wondrous story meandering through a century of history. Well narrated. He uses the English language as it should be used.

Bad narration

I’m half way through this book having been recommended it but the narration is spoiling it for me. Simple words pronounced incorrectly, monotone voice and you can hear where sentences and passages have been inserted. Rather than bringing the characters to life the narration has left me feeling completely uninterested in them.

Brilliantly written, moving until the last word.

I loved it! I had to speed it up slightly to hear it better and with more emotion. An incredible journey of a man who meets famous people, travels to interesting places, reflects on life's experiences just as they are. Beautiful descriptions, I had to listen to several times and even note down, as they were so poignant.

I began listening to it over a period of time my father was ill and it sounded like his life unravelling in front of my eyes, and Logan's whole fascinating life and story finished a day before my father passed away. This book will leave a lasting impression on me.
If you want to know what goes on inside a male mind throughout his life, whatever gender you are, this is the book. I am a great fan of Midnight in Paris, where the lead travels through time and meets all the famous writers, artists and bohemian giants of all time, this has that wonderful combination of fiction and fact. William Boyd is now my favourite author and the book I just happened to come across and give a try, a blessing in disguise.

A book I want to read another time

The story of an entire life spanning the events and characters of the 20th century. It’s a life which at moments you admire, and at moments you disapprove of - just as any person’s life. The performance is brilliant and so believable, I felt Logan Montstuart was personally reading it to me.

Plot twists and authenticity by reference to real people and events.

Really engaging storytelling with a protagonist who was deeply flawed but lived a fascinating long life. Glad I listened to Audible rather than read the novel as the narrator was excellent.
