About this listen

Art Sex Music is the autobiography of a musician who, as a founding member of the avant-garde group Throbbing Gristle and electronic pioneers Chris & Cosey, has consistently challenged the boundaries of music over the past four decades.

It is the account of an artist who, as part of COUM Transmissions, represented Britain at the IXth Biennale de Paris, whose Prostitution show at the ICA in 1976 caused the Conservative MP Nicholas Fairbairn to declare her, COUM and Throbbing Gristle "Wreckers of Civilisation"...shortly before he was arrested for indecent exposure, and whose work continues to be held at the vanguard of contemporary art. And it is the story of her work as a pornographic model and striptease artiste which challenged assumptions about morality, erotica, and art. Wise, shocking, and elegant, this is the life of Cosey Fanni Tutti.

Contains mature themes.

Honest and compelling account of a life well lived. With brilliant Hull-toned narration. Must have.

compelling biography

This is a captivating story from an extremely interesting human being who has broken through social norms to produce thought provoking, landmark audio and visual work. I am left with a profound respect for Cosey Fanni Tutti and many of those who collaborated with her.

Well worth the time

.but is it art?

I found the narration a little bit jarring, she seemed to put the emphasis on the wrong words every now and then, and her Hull accent seemed a bit too ee by gum.

I'd like to understand more about what motivated Cosey et al to do some of the more shocking stuff, eg what was the point of making a film depicting castration?

I'd like to know what caused Genesis P Orridge to be so awful.

Overall a good listen.

Interesting..

I was always vaguely aware of Genesis P-Orridge and Psychic TV but it was only more recently that I heard about Cosey Fanni Tutti. This was a fascinating listen, at times very difficult but also full of down to earth northern humour. It may run on a little long for some people unless they are already fans of Cosey and her work and associations with industrial music.

A life lived out loud

I absolutely loved listening to the trials and tribulations, ups, downs and triumphs of one of the UK’s most underrated and groundbreaking female artists. Thanks for forging the way and enabling others to follow in your footsteps.

Impatiently awaiting the screenplay 🙏🏻

Cosey Nights In

If you're a fan of Cosey or have an interest in the post-punk scene and the myriad works they've influenced, don't hesitate: get this! Just be aware that Gabrielle Baker's narration will not be to everyone's taste. In attempting to invoke Cosey's accent, she ends up with a strange impersonation that is jarringly inauthentic at times - like a natural RP speaker's assumption of what someone from the Humber region sounds like. You have to sympathise. It must have been a tricky brief. A shame that Cosey didn't narrate it then, but an engrossing self-portrait.

Wonderful memoir, dubious narration

Cosey Fanni Tutti is not a household name. She is best known as founder member of COUM Transmissions and the industrial band Throbbing Gristle ("TG") and there is a lot more to her besides. In this candid autobiography she tells the story of her upbringing in Hull and the way that she rebelled following her meeting with Genesis P Orridge ("Gen"). This is a story about an artist outside the mainstream who has continually sort out new and innovative way of expression ranging from performance art to music all of which has been ground-breaking and unique.
I first became aware of Cosey through her work with TG and followed her through her collaboration with Chris Carter in Chris and Cosey. It is an extremely honest account of her relationship with Gen and talks about the highs and lows of their relationship over the years.
It was only after this book that I took the time to look back through the rest of her career and realised what an extraordinary artist she is.

Excellent memoire of an avant garde artist

I took a punt on this as Cosey was the most interesting part of the coum transmissions doc on BBC 4. Glad I did. Now a fan of TG and Coseys life and approach is facinating.

Excellent book
