Striped Bass and Catfish Reign at Lake Texoma Despite Turnover Challenges

  • Summary

  • As of October 6, 2024, the fishing scene at Lake Texoma is quite promising, despite the challenging conditions due to the lake turning over.

    ### Weather and Water Conditions
The water is stained, with a temperature of around 75 degrees, and the lake level is 1.51 feet below pool. The weather is expected to be partly sunny with increasing clouds, and a high of 95 degrees during the day, dropping to 66 degrees at night.

    ### Sunrise and Sunset
Sunrise is at about 7:30 AM, and sunset will be around 7:00 PM, providing a good window for early morning and late evening fishing.

    ### Fish Activity
Striped bass fishing has been excellent, particularly in the early morning hours. These fish are being caught on shallow flats in 1-6 feet of water, as well as on deeper flats in 25-40 feet of water near river channels. Look for schools of fish under diving birds, as this is a good indicator of feeding activity. For larger striped bass, try blind casting shallow flats or using topwaters along the banks.

Catfish are also doing well, with good numbers caught while drifting cut shad along flats in 15-25 feet of water and on anchor in 30-40 feet of water off the bottom. Largemouth bass fishing is slow due to low lake levels, but targeting exposed boulders and lay downs with electronics can be fruitful. Crappie fishing is slow but improving as water temperatures drop; focus on brush piles in 15-20 feet of water using minnows and small jigs.

    ### Best Lures and Bait
For striped bass, pencil poppers, slabs, and swimbaits are highly effective. Live bait such as gizzard shad and threadfin shad are also producing good results. For catfish, cut shad is the way to go. For bass, topwaters and soft plastics around points and deep drop-offs are recommended. For crappie, minnows and small chartreuse jigs on brush piles are the best bet.

    ### Hot Spots
One of the hot spots is the area around the river channels and ledges in 25-40 feet of water, where striped bass are schooling up. Another good spot is the shallow flats east of North Island, where topwater action has been reported. The Little Mineral Arm is also worth checking out, especially for crappie fishing around brush piles.

Overall, Lake Texoma is offering some great fishing opportunities, especially for those targeting striped bass and catfish. Be patient, use the right lures and bait, and you'll have a successful day on the water.
