About this listen

MORE THAN A CENTURY IN THE MAKING…

Since the Clan Invasion of 3050 ended in failure, there have been those who have not forgotten Nicholas Kerensky’s ultimate goal: The conquering of Terra, and the rise of one clan above all others…to become the ilClan, and rule over both the rest of the Clans and the Inner Sphere…regardless of what the Great Houses may say about it…

THE BATTLE THAT WILL RESHAPE THE INNER SPHERE BEGINS…

Now, in 3151, two Clans make the final jump into the shattered remains of the Republic of the Sphere. Their target: the cradle of humankind…and the ultimate symbol of the Inner Sphere…Terra. But Clans Jade Falcon and Wolf will face a powerful, tenacious enemy in the remaining forces of the Republic, led by their resurrected leader, Devlin Stone. The impending battle will engulf the entire planet, and when it is over, only one shall stand supreme...

I've been long waiting for the final telling of the ilclan rise to power. The narrators brought the characters to life that gripped my imagination and enjoyment, much as they have in other works. I did notice an issue with a small section of audio that was missing towards the end, however all in all, I really liked this novel.

I look forward to the next expansion of this Ilclan saga. Thank you!

A very enjoyable story

To begin, I found the story to be predictable, bloated, and generally unrealistic. Anyone with even a cursory understanding of the history of warfare will see very quickly the elephant in the room… In our current age, tanks and heavy armor can be easily brought down with mines or any number of relatively cheap and readily available explosives and/or the more expensive option of air superiority. One would think that in the year 3050, they might have conceived of even better and cheaper ways of eliminating big, stomping robots.
Even allowing for a generous dose of suspension of disbelief, the scenario of the narrative just seems wildly implausible. It just doesn’t make any sense to fight with mechs when there are better and cheaper ways to wage war. Furthermore, the author does nothing in this story to explain away this fact. No explanation. No justification. Nothing….
Secondly, the character of Malvena Hazen is one the worst villains in all of fiction. We’re repeatedly told throughout the story that she is ‘an unrivaled military genius’ and her ‘skill is beyond compare’, but in reality she just comes off as an overdone cartoon villain with no real weight or sense of menace. She alternates between acting like a three year old who hasn’t gotten her way and a teenage bully berating her ever shrinking group of friends. We’re constantly told that she’s a ‘tactical genius’, yet she acts like an idiot. Ridiculous.
I probably could have overlooked this issue if it wasn’t for the truly awful narration. You basically have one narrator (the male one) that does an excellent job, while the other one (the female one) is so bad as to be unintentionally hilarious. The contrast is like torture. Her accents are all over the place (even for the same character), her delivery is atrocious, and her timing is frequently off. I involuntarily shuddered every time she took over the narration. Absolutely tragic.
To whomever produced this audio book: Two narrators are NOT better than one. Please don’t ever do this again! Placing an amateur with a pro just brings the entire quality level of the production down.

A mediocre story hobbled further by dual narrators

Hour of the Wolf was a solid BattleTech story, but sometimes the narration was distracting. Trek Sparks was excellent, but Sierra Taft was more varied, at times excellent and at others sounding like an AI with staccato performance and inconsistent accents. They are both excellent voice actors, but I think think this could’ve been better. On a similar note, some recorded lines were duplicated and others missed out (and some changed from the text, which I sometimes read along with), which distracted from the storytelling.

A solid BattleTech story

Story was well balanced, a bit on the long side, but with so many characters to get through, it needed to be. Action is fun and the twists and turns are enjoyable. Narration is a mixed bag, Tren Sparks is on foam as always, bring to life different characters. Sierra Taft came across as very amateurish, couldn't pronounce certain words clearly and terrible at accents. it really took me out of the moment. Other than that, the book is a good read or listen to.

jam packed good start to the ilClan era
