About this listen

After a weekend with old friends, it was meant to be a straightforward journey, a regular drive back home. Before me the highway seemed to go on forever, black and slippery with rain, the repetitive sound of the windshield wipers timing my ideas. Though the laughing and recollections had been worth the wait, it was late, later than I had intended to be on the road. Looking at my dashboard's clock, 12: 47 AM, I felt a few more hours would find me home, snug in my bed.

The rain increased, turning into a torrential deluge that made visibility practically impossible. Slowing down, I tightened my hold on the steering wheel; the headlights hardly broke through the heavy rain mist. The road was deserted no taillights ahead, and no headlights behind. Just me, the rain, and the unending length of tarmac. Then it occurred. A shadow ran across the road, too quickly for me to respond. I hit the brakes, my vehicle sliding as the tires struggled for grip on the slick road. My pulse hammered in my chest as the vehicle drifted sideways, ultimately coming to a rest on the shoulder.
