About this listen

When young, penniless Bellarion finds himself thrust into a murderous intrigue, his sharp wit and scholarly background allow him to see things invisible to others.

Set in 15th century Italy, and cast with a rogues’ gallery of colorful villains, Bellarion adroitly navigates the complicated world of dukes, counts, and countesses to rise to unusual prominence and serve a purpose all his own.

Rafael Sabatini (1875-1950) was an Italian-English novelist and a short story writer. He produced over thirty novels, six nonfiction books, eight collections of short stories and various uncollected short stories.

I just so enjoyed this book, to have the hero cerebral rather than gung-ho was just brilliant. What a film it would make! The city states states of Italy controlled by noble houses and mercenaries must have been terrifying time so to have a hero who thinks his way through and keeps several steps ahead is truly one of the Masters most ingenious creations. I’ve read the majority of his books bought at book fares and second hand shops and this is up with the best of them. Ignore the odd pronunciation this is an excellent listen. Enjoy!

One of Sabatini’s best

Beautifully written and consulate storytelling from a talented and excellent and respected historian. His knowledge of his subject lent immediacy and realism to the story as does excellent narration.

The story of Bellarion in my opinion was certainly far more than romance as it was describe and which almost prevented me from listening. In fact any romance was suspected by the reader than inferred. It is more of a historical story of events in the 15th century in what we now know as Italy's principalities. I did not much care for the reader and by simply reducing his speed of reading made the words come more alive for me rather than losing myself in his attempt to pronounce Italian names and places.

Flipping heck this is a load of old bollocks! Pretentiously written in cod-olde English with 2-dimensional characters. Couldn’t finish it Getting my credit back, which I don’t do often.
