About this listen
A pioneer of cultural psychology argues that emotions are not innate, but made as we live our lives together.
“How are you feeling today?” We may think of emotions as universal responses, felt inside. Using decades-long, cutting-edge research, acclaimed psychologist Batja Mesquita asks us to reconsider emotions through the lens of what they do in our relationships, both one-on-one and within larger social networks. From an outside-in perspective, readers will understand why pride in a Dutch context does not translate well to North Carolina, or why one’s anger at a boss does not mean the same as your anger to a partner in a close relationship. By looking outward at relationships at work, school, and home, we can better judge how our emotions will be understood, how they might change a situation, and how they change us.
Brilliantly synthesizing original psychological studies and stories from peoples across time and geography, Between Us skillfully argues that acknowledging differences in emotions allows us to find common ground, humanizing and humbling us all for the better.

A decent but not whole outline of how and why people have unique emotional worlds
The book is worth your time if you are interested in understanding human psyche or if you have relationships with people from different cultures. That said, I think the author stumbles upon the semantics problem that she outlined herself. Often times she claims examples of different emotions where I would claim the examples showed how the same underlying universal emotions are expressed and are integrated into ones life differently. That does not mean that we may not have different emotions, but the book lacked the outline of universality of physiology which is related to emotions and it also lacked the philosophical depth that this topic demands. Overall, I would give a lower score for this book but I don't want to discourage people from reading it. BUY IT

Do emotions differ among different cultures?
Fascinating and convincing argument that indeed emotions are experienced differently and played out in complex and varied ways in different cultures around the world. With a compassionate and hopeful stress towards the end of the book about what this might mean for an increasingly multicultural world.
