Repairing the colony ship is his only hope of escape, but Bishop discovers he is up against more than just pirates. The government itself has a stake in current events, forcing Bishop to take on the military, as well as the impending alien threat. With few friends and less time, Bishop must fight for his life in order to save himself and the last remnants of humanity.

This book is an omnibus of three short stories and, presumably, the prelude to further instalments although the story is complete in itself. The basic premise is good, with some interesting fight sequences but is low on character development: ironically the most satisfying is the irascible A.I. But there is an overall superficiality to the entire story, including with the plot itself which failed to fully convince this reader: too little detail as s!lightly abrasive movement from one scenario to the next combined with a seeming obsession with viral attacks. The narrator, Mike Thomas, does a good job in holding it all together, with a pleasant voice, good intonation and pacing, and bringing in distinctive voicing s for the various protagonists. He certainly he!ps to breath life into the text.
I was fortunate in being freely gifted with a complimentary copy of Bishop's Gambit, at my request, by the rights holder via Audiobook Boom. Thank you. Despite not being fully involving, it was an enjoyable listen, a science fiction space opera more likely to appeal to young adults than old SF hands who prefer their science a little more detailed.
