About this listen

They call her Blister. She's a hideously disfigured 23-year-old woman, living in a shed next to her father's house, hidden away from the world.

Jason Tray is a successful cartoonist, banished to his agent's lakeside cabin for a few days of mandatory rest and relaxation. One night, while hanging out with a couple of the locals at a dive bar, he takes them up on their offer to go "see Blister," having no idea what they're talking about.

He peeks through the window at the most nightmarish thing he's ever seen.

In the morning, he wakes up, hung over and regretful. He's better than this. Does he need to apologize?

Twisted little story

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this story , good southern drawl by the narrator, very entertaining, with twists and turns

Brilliant.

What a fantastic story. I thought it would be a gore fest, but how wrong was I.
It was a deep, dark and lovely story. Brilliantly written and brilliantly narrated.

A blistering good listen!

From this book’s blurb and cover I was expecting and hoping for a bloody horror novel, but the story is actually very slippery to define. Yes, there are horrific moments, but there are also elements of family drama, small town intrigue and secrets, police procedural and romance. And just as the book defies neat categorisation, so it also shifts tone – at times, very abruptly. Strand is an expert of making you laugh in one light-hearted sentence and suddenly becoming deadly serious the next.

I have been turned off by the narrators in my last few audiobooks, so it was wonderful to listen to the EXCELLENT narrator here. The story is told in first person, and the narrator perfectly conveys the humour, intelligence, kindness and morality of the protagonist. He also deftly negotiates the changing tones of the book. I actually laughed out loud a number of times, his performance is that effective.

In conclusion, although people looking for a gore-soaked horror-fest will be disappointed, I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone looking for an original, fun and unpredictable horror-adjacent story.
