About this listen

The first clear and faithful guide to the timeless, practical teachings of the Stoic philosopher Seneca.

Stoicism, the most influential philosophy of the Roman Empire, offers refreshingly modern ways to strengthen our inner character in the face of an unpredictable world. Widely recognized as the most talented and humane writer of the Stoic tradition, Seneca teaches us to live with freedom and purpose. His most enduring work, over a hundred "Letters from a Stoic" written to a close friend, explains how to handle adversity; overcome grief, anxiety, and anger; transform setbacks into opportunities for growth; and recognize the true nature of friendship.

In Breakfast with Seneca, philosopher David Fideler mines Seneca's classic works in a series of focused chapters, clearly explaining Seneca's ideas without oversimplifying them. Best enjoyed as a daily ritual, like an energizing cup of coffee, Seneca's wisdom provides us with a steady stream of time-tested advice about the human condition - which, as it turns out, hasn't changed much over the past 2,000 years.

As well as a strong summary of Stoicsm this book clarifies done if the myths and incorrect assertions around Stoicism that many modern "self help" & "Growth mindset" books ate running with.
Stoicsm is NOT about showing no emotion and rising above all adversity. Quite the opposite, its about understanding what's right & everything in universal and natural law and leading a life on those terms.
It is about virtue and understanding what is important in a virtuous life and a rejection of materialism.
Stoicsm is NOT a catechism for masculinity and inner strength.

Good handbook to leading a Stoic life

I had this title in my wish list so I was delighted to see it was added to the included catalogue. It would absolutely have been worth a credit.

A very engaging overview of Seneca, that mentions which letter is being discussed, allowing you to look up the original should any one be of particular interest.

In contrast to another reviewer, I thought the narration was absolutely fine.

Great introduction to Seneca

The content of this audio book is excellent, and I've read it in text form a few times so I thought the audiobook would be a good addition.
Unfortunately the narrator's delivery is halting and robotic in nature - honestly it's only marginally better than listening to a text-to-speech computer rendering the text.
The narrator manages to crush any life out of the text with their poor delivery.

Great Content, Very Poor Narrator
