About this listen

After gaining valuable experience as an aide to Governor Lord Horatio Hornblower, William Brewer is rewarded with a posting as first lieutenant on the frigate HMS Defiant, bound for American waters. Early in their travels, it seems as though Brewer’s greatest challenge will be evading the wrath of a tyrannical captain who has taken an active dislike to him. But when a hurricane sweeps away the captain, the young lieutenant is forced to assume command of the damaged ship, and a crew suffering from low morale.

Brewer reports their condition to Admiral Hornblower, who orders them into the Caribbean to destroy a nest of pirates hidden among the numerous islands. Luring the pirates out of their coastal lairs will be difficult enough; fighting them at sea could bring disaster to the entire operation. For the Defiant to succeed, Brewer must rely on his wits, his training, and his ability to shape a once-ragged crew into a coherent fighting force.

I absolutely LOVED this book!It was full of adventure on the high seas with pirates and British frigates.We meet Boneparte! Nigel Peever brings it all to life.He does every character with vigor!I was sad when it ended,but I see,I have the next book! I absolutely love the brewer series and the sound effects make them exciting (wish all adventure books had the same )I read all the naval novels I can find in audible James Keffer narrates so naturally and makes the book flow I can’t wait for any new brewer books to come available terrific read .

This is not the normal kind of book I go for I am more the horror sci-fi kinda guy but this was a great listen Well written Great narration A real all round good job cant wait for the next one. AAA+👌

A very exciting first book in the Brewer series. Action packed from start to finish this story is enhanced by the very appropriate use of sound effects and Nigel Peevers imitable style of narration makes this a most entertaining listen.

This book has way too much of 'he said' and 'said Brewer' etc. And the narrator has an annoying habit of incorrectly emphasising parts of sentences, implying full stops or breaks in the wrong places, by using excessive inflection on the wrong word, and it doesn't happen infrequently. Apart from that it was a good production. But I've high standards having come from Rodska narrating Hornblower.

Not my usual type of listening but my sister recommended it and I thought I would give it a try. I am so pleased I did. It was wonderful the story was complemented by the wonderful narration, the sounds of the sea, the creaking of the ship with the noise of the cannons was a great addition bringing it to life. I loved this book. Now onto number 2

After listening to all of the Thomas Kydd books, found Brewers and is far better, excellent stories and narration, shame here is only 4 books

great narration saves this story, but whilst imitation is flattery, go to the original Aubrey and maturin or Hornblower series to for real quality
